In my twitter feed a couple of days ago I saw the question — ‘What’s the best way to deal with uncertainty?’

My immediate reply was, ‘Love it.’

I didn’t even have to think about that reply, because I don’t think uncertainty is a problem. Uncertainty is the way of life, so why not embrace it. Just love it.

Of course, I do understand why people see uncertainty as a problem. We like to know that things are going to happen according to plan. In general, people feel most comfortable when they have a sense of stability and control over what happens in their lives. Seems reasonable, until you really think about it.

I mean, is it really reasonable to have your sense of well-being depend on a particular set of circumstances or a particular outcome? No matter how hard you try, and how organised you believe you are, you cannot dictate how things turn out. That just isn’t the way life works.

The entire universe — all happenings throughout all time — have led up to this moment being exactly the way it is.

This is the truth. But we like to believe that our individual actions are capable of determining an outcome, and we get upset when that doesn’t happen, and we make uncertainty a problem.
